Hygge Self-Care - Part One

Hej as the Danish say…or hello! This is all about how to use hygge to help with self-care. Self-care is such an important thing for us all to think about and more importantly, carry out. So I thought I’d give you some ideas as to how to go about it. So without further ado, here goes.

  1. Be your own best friend. Stop looking for that special person that will always be there for you. They are there already, all you need do is look in the mirror. Learn to be your biggest fan, if you make a mistake, give yourself words of encouragement as you would do to a good friend. If others are good to you and treat you poorly, don’t let them get away with it. You can be kind but firm.

  2. Live your life from the heart. Your head will give you great advice, but your heart will always guide you in the right direction, if you put your own welfare first.

  3. Make your own food. Nothing beats home cooking that has been done from scratch. Buy good ingredients, fresh fruit and vegetables, seasonal meat if you are not vegetarian, and then you’ll know exactly what you are putting in your body to make you feel great.

  4. Drink good beverages. Drink herbal teas that give your body a boost and help your organs do their job. But also let yourself enjoy the hot chocolate, the lush tasting coffee, just don’t drink too much of it. For those hot summer days, drink fruit water, or good spring water to flush out toxins.

  5. Continue education. Every day is a school day is a term my husband uses a lot. And it’s so true. Keep your brain ticking over, learn a new skill, do that course that you’ve always wanted to do, and enjoy using the ‘little grey cells’.

  6. Make a vision board. Keep your dreams in front of you and make that board to help guide you when you come to crossroads in your life. Part of self-care means taking actions on your goals.

  7. Simplify your life. Try and commit to owning less ‘stuff’. Make sure you love every bit of clothing you have and that you’re comfortable wearing it.

  8. Little luxuries. Spoil yourself with high quality but inexpensive treats. Buy a candle with a scent you love. If you have a sweet tooth, indulge in a small box of luxurious chocolates.

  9. Wrap yourself in nature. Bring houseplants in, open windows and doors and let fresh air into your home. Walk in woods and through meadows and parks. Wander by rivers and streams.

  10. Release negativity. Let go of the people that no longer serve a good purpose with love and thankfulness and then move on.

  11. Have a daily plan. Make a plan of how you want to start your day, live your day and how to end the day. Just add one idea at a time.

  12. Magical moments. Find those magic moments in a smile, the clouds, bird song, music. Looking for joy in unexpected places gives you a sense of gratitude that makes your day brighter.

This is the first part of Hygge Self-Care. Next time we’ll go on with more ideas on how to look after yourself the hygge way.

Until then, take care and peaceful wishes.
