Hygge Christmas - Part 2

Hi everyone, and welcome to Hygge Christmas Part 2. This time let’s look at how to create a Hygge Christmas with family and friends.

Having comfort and company is the central part of hygge and what better time to nurture this than at Christmas. Here are a few tips on how we can bring hygge throughout December, not just for one or two days. The main point of this is to learn how to enjoy the dark days and make the most of them, not just be impatient for them to be over.

  • Organise a family date on which you can all get together and do a Christmas job together. It could be making decorations, Christmas card writing or even making your own.

  • If you have children, find a book of Christmas stories and read one a night at bedtime.

  • Have friends and family round for a Christmas ‘carolling’ evening. Provide Danish beer or a bottle of wine to help those feeling a bit shy to have a go.

  • Host a Christmas baking party. Get together and jointly make the Christmas cake, pudding, etc so that it becomes a joint event rather than just one person doing it.

  • Have a ‘deck the halls’ day, where everyone comes round and helps to decorate the house.

  • If you are feeling particularly brave go for a brisk walk, jog, hike or even, a swim in a lake or river. Your home will feel even more comforting and hyggelig when you arrive back!

The Danish celebrate Christmas through the whole of December. Long dinners or lunches are taken with family and at work with colleagues. These are known as julefrokost and the main focus is on great friendship, friendly conversation and delicious, warming food. Even if you’re not Danish, you can create your own julefrokost with different groups of friends and family members.

Why not stretch the Christmas cheer over the month of December rather than focusing it all on just one day.

Next time, we’ll talk about Hygge decorations and how they really set the tone for a hyggelig atmosphere. Until then take care and peaceful wishes.
